Along with twice yearly cleanings and exams, we also recommend application of topical fluoride to help remineralize the enamel on children's teeth (3-13 years old). This is also done twice a year and will help to prevent cavities from developing and possibly even reverse the progression of early decay. The fluoride varnish is painted onto the teeth using a small brush. After the varnish is placed, it is important to avoid drinking hot liquids, since this will dissolve the varnish, making it ineffective. The varnish should be allowed to remain on the teeth for a few hours before brushing the teeth.
